First DNA chip designed to detect hepatitis & AIDS

Shaanxi Chaoqun Science & Technology Co. has started trial production of the first DNA chip in China, to be used to detect hepatitis B and C viruses and the AIDS virus.

The SPGC-200 DNA chip, also called the gene chip, is a high-tech product designed and developed by Shaanxi Chaoqun, according to the Oct. 9 Chinese Medical News.

Through molecular hybridization techniques, the chip carries out a variety of tests at molecular levels, such as gene functions, disease examination and drug screening.

The DNA chip is superior to traditional biotechnology in terms of efficiency, speed and accuracy. It is also very safe and highly sensitive, the story said.

The company plans to market 1.2 million chips this year.
