When Acupuncture Gives You Pins and Needles
Here's a possible solution
What do you do with a patient who seems to be a perfect candidate for acupuncture, but is afraid of needles?
The 1999 issue of Acupuncture and Electrotherapy Research recommends hypnosis.
According to a report from Lehigh Valley Hospital in Pennsylvania, acupuncture can be a terrifying experience for people with needle phobia. But by calming them with hypnosis, they can overcome their fear, the report states.
The Lehigh researchers say patients who underwent hypnosis to overcome their fear of acupuncture actually improved faster than those who weren't afraid of needles. Apparently there's an interaction between hypnosis and acupuncture that makes them work better together.
So if your acupuncturist tries to put you to sleep, or your hypnotist starts sticking pins in you, don't get upset. It may be the new-age treatment.
