Intramedicine Acquires World's Largest TCM Database

For the first time ever, doctors, pharmacists and health care providers will have online access to the world's largest database of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Intramedicine, the global leader in integrative medical information, acquired the Traditional Chinese Medicine data including 600 TCM herbal monographs from several of the major TCM institutions in China.

"This acquisition is the merging of thousands of years of Eastern medicine with Western medical expertise, " said Ann Wang, O.M.D., an Adjunct Professor at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine who is leading this project for Intramedicine. "It will allow health care providers and researchers to offer people the best medical care in the world, merging the finest aspects of Traditional Chinese medical diagnostic and treatment techniques with conventional medicine." Dr. Wang also served as a Chief Medical Administrator for the Bureau of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a division of China's Department of Public Health, and is a member of Intramedicine's Medical Advisory Board.

Each TCM monograph will be fully referenced and translated and will include toxicity and pharmacology information. More importantly, each monograph will identify all of the known active chemicals for each herb.

"This is a significant breakthrough in integrative medicine. It will help health care professionals incorporate TCM in their practice and manufacturers develop new, cutting edge products," said James LaValle, R.Ph., Intramedicine's Chief Clinical Officer. "When cross-referenced with Intramedicine's pharmacology database, it enables Intramedicine to become the first clinical research provider to identify and present interactions information for Traditional Chinese Medicinal herbs and pharmaceuticals."

TCM has been practiced for more than 4,000 years and is used by more than 1.5 billion people worldwide. It is based upon a medical system, which views each patient as unique, and looks for the underlying causes of imbalances and patterns of disharmony in the body. It incorporates a wide range of treatments, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, dietary therapy, massage and therapeutic exercise.

Interest in TCM is rapidly growing in the West, as consumers are increasingly looking for effective alternative medical therapies. This trend is pushing physicians, pharmacists, drug manufacturers and health system managers to learn more about TCM and how it interacts with conventional drugs and treatment programs.

"As TCM continues to grow in popularity in the U.S., we anticipate an increasing need for scientifically verified information to support product development and sales," said Jeff Eisenberg, CEO of Intramedicine, "and we will be the first to provide this information."
