Tendrilled Fritillarv & Loquart Extract is a new drug developed by Ezhong Pharmaceutical Factory, Wuhan, Hubei Province, and Affiliated Hospital of Hubei Medical College, and used for the treatment of diseases of respiratory tract. It consists of 15 traditional Chinese medicines such as Bulbus Fritillaria Cirrhosae, Folium Eriobotryae, Radix Adenophorae Jtrictae, Poria, Exocarpium Citrii Grandis, Radix Platycodi, Rhizoma Pinellinae Praeparata, Frutus Schisandra, Semen Trichosanthes,
Flos Farfarae and Radix Polygalae. It has the effects of nourishing the lung to arrest cough and eliminating phlegm to relieve asthma. It is indicated to the treatment of cough due to the dryness of the lung, profuse expectoration, stuffiness in chest, dyspnea, pharynx gargalesthesia, hoarseness, xerosis cutis, malnutrition and night terror due to the asthenia of the spleen and stomach. The results of research are reviewed as follows.

Introduction of the Preparation
This product contains Bulbus Fritillaria Cirihosae, Folium Eriobotryae, Radix Adenophorae Jtrictae, Poria, Exocarpium Citrii Grandis, Radix Platycodi, Rhizoma Pinellinae Praeparata, Fructus Schisandra, Semen Trichosanthes, Flos Farfarae, Radix
Polygalae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, Radix Glycy Rihizae and Herba Menthae(the dosages are omitted). Sichuan fritillary bulb should be mashed. The crude power is extracted with ethanol (70% ) for 5 days according to the “Requirement of Soft Extract (the Appendix of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Part I )" Then leak out the solvent slowly and make sure that the soluble parts extracted completely. Recycle the ethanol and reduce them to soft extract. Bitter apricot kernel should be pressed to dispel the fatty oil in it and mashed. The residue is distilled with hot steam, collect the distillate. Fresh ginger and liquorice should be extracted with ethanol (90% ) for 14 days. Filtrate and collect the filtrate. The extract is reduced to soft extract. The other 10 Chinese medicinal herbs should be decocted with water for 3 hours. The decoction is filtered and the filtrate is reduced to extract. Mix the extracts mentioned above, and add 287g honey and 249g maltose and suitable amount of syrup. Mix thoroughly to make a mixture. The mixture is reduced to acquired relative density and put aside to cool them. Add water extract of bitter apricot kernel and peppermint solved in ethanol. Mix up and dilute to 1000ml to make the preparation.
This product is a brown and thick semi-fluid which smells as apricot and tastes sweet, pungent and cool.

Experimental Approach
The pharmacokinetical and pharmacological research are processed in the Experimental Center of Hubei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
1. Pharmacokinetics
1). Cough relieving effect: Results from experiments suggest that, “Ke Bi Qing"can significantly prolong the incubation period of cough, reduce the frequency of cough, with a very significant difference between it and that of the control group. “Honey Chuanbei Pipa Soft Extract"in a high, middle or low dosage) can also significantly prolong the incubation period of cough, reduce the frequency of cough, in which there is a significant difference from the results from the control group.
2) Expectoration effect: Results from experiments show that the amount of the excretion of chlorophenol red is very significantly higher than that in the control group, which suggests that it has an obvious effect of removing the phlegm. The amount of the excretion of chlorophenol red when treated with “Honey Chuanbei Pipa Soft Extract"(in a high, middle or low dosage) is very significantly higher than that in the control group, suggesting that it has an obvious effect of removing the phlegm.
3). Anti-asthmatic effect. Results from experiments show that the incubation period in aminophyl1ine group is prolonged very obviously and is very significantly higher than that in control, suggesting that it can inhibit asthma very significantly. “Honey Chuanbei Pipa Soft Extract"in a high, middle or low dosage can also prolong the incubation period and has a significant difference from the control group suggesting that “Honey Chuanbei Pipa Soft Extract"has an anti-asthmatic effect.
4). Anti- inflammatory effect. Results from experiments show that both aspirin and
“Honey Chuanbei Pipa Soft Extract"in a high, middle or low dosage can relieve inflammation of mice, with a significant difference of the control group.
2. Pharmacology
Observation of the effect of this product on the blood pressure, heart rate and myocardial oxygen consumption of dog show that the blood pressure, heart rate and myocardial oxygen consumption are reduced in “Honey Chuanbei Pipa Soft Extract"group which is significantly different from the results of the control group.

Clinical Research
This product was used in the Affiliated Hospital of the Hubei College of TCM for the treatment of 316 cases of bronchitis. The significant effectiveness was 60.44% and the total effectiveness was 87.97%. It had an obvious effect on the improvement of clinical symptoms such as cough, asthma and expectoration regardless of the age and sex of the patients in the clinica1 application. It has no side effect on the gastro- intestinal tract, and no obvious toxic and side effect was observed on the vital organs such as heart, liver and kidney. Compared with “Ke Bi Qing" of the 30 cases therapy group, the significant effectiveness is 60% and the total effectiveness is 86.67%; while that of the 30 cases in “Ke Bi Qing"group, the significant effectiveness is 46.67% and the total effectiveness is 76.67 %. The two kinds of therapeutic effectiveness in the therapy group is higher than those in the control group and there is a significant difference between the two groups.

Conclusion
In a word, this product is a reasonable preparation, and it is produced with a scientific technique which fits the theory of traditional Chinese medicine well. It has a definit e therapeutic effectiveness and is safe and effective without side or toxic effect. So it is
worthy of being applied and popularized.
