Waiting to Exhale Can Improve Your Health

Carol Sorgen, Medical Writer
Breathing is something you probably take for granted, but you might not be doing it correctly.

"Many people, unfortunately, are shallow breathers," says Aristotle Economou, chiropractor and founding director of Taris Beverly Hills, a clinic specializing in alternative medicine (www.tarisbeverlyhills.com).

As you read this sentence, for instance, says Economou, notice your breathing. Is it shallow? Are you taking short breaths? As you continue reading, take in a full breath and exhale. You will probably notice a change. This is the difference, Economou says, between proper breathing and shallow breathing.

"Through the practice of proper breathing techniques," says Economou, "you will be able to increase your strength and vitality. Many of your organs and their systems benefit in that the cells are able to improve performance through properly oxygenated blood.

"The build-up of carbon dioxide in your body can alter the delicate balance of pH. This in turn can lead to sickness and a poor quality of life. With proper breathing, many toxins are released and energetic levels are restored."
