China Succeeds in Skin Regeneration, Duplication

Chinese scientists have fulfilled the promise of skin regeneration by stem cell culturing in vivo and in situ, and successfully applied the technology in treating extensive deep burn victims.

Professor Xu Rongxiang, the inventor of the therapy, and his team introduced the technology in Beijing Tuesday at a press conference on "Achievements in Burn Treatment by Skin Regeneration".

Some one dozen burn patients with over 90 percent of their total body surfaces burned and deep burns healed by skin regeneration appeared at the event to demonstrate the repaired and regenerated new skin.

Professor Xu explained that, subsequent to a burn injury, the human body has an instinct to trigger residual tissue in situ to regenerate stem cells, which then are adjusted to give rise to skin tissue, based on Moist Exposed Burn Therapy (MEBT), also invented by himself.

In the past, once burned, skin-burn wounds usually healed spontaneously, leaving scars because of the lack of organ repair and duplication techniques.

Surgical excision was performed on the wounds incapable of healing, and then the wounds healed following skin grafting, which resulted in disablement.

Achievement of stem cell regeneration in situ by Professor Xu is a breakthrough in stem cell research, the press conference was told.

To benefit all burn patients with this breakthrough and provide scientific data for medical education, the China National Burns Association (West-East) has compiled the "Blue Book on Burn Therapy."

The book gives intensive descriptions of the therapeutic bases of burn skin regeneration techniques and methodology, as well as other achievements in stem cell regeneration in situ.

Professor Xu also gave a detailed presentation on research directions and prospects for stem cell culturing in situ in the fields of skin cosmetics, repair of gastrointestinal membrane and other types of organ duplication, which are expected to revolutionize the practice of medicine.
