The new Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was set up on Monday by merging with a former indepandent college:Beijing College of Acupuncture and Orthopedics with approval of the Ministry of Education (MOE). The university is to be under the administration of MOE. The set-up of the new university was inaugurated yesterday.

Beijing University of Traditioanl Chinese Medicine (formerly known as Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine) was founded in 1956, which used to be under the direct administration of the State Administration of Chinese Traditional Medicine. It is one of the earliest institutes of higher learning for traditional Chinese medicine and also the only college of traditional Chinese medicine being included in the "211 Project".

Beijing College of Acupuncture and Orthopedics was set up in 1986. It was the sole college of traditional Chinese medicine in China specialized in acupuncture and traditional Chinese orthopedics.

The newly founded university has nearly 5000 students on campus,including more than 540 overseas students.With the faculty of more than 2,600, the university offers doctorate and master degrees.

The university will become the center for developing new medicines and international exchanges on traditional Chinese medicine.
