Ancient Gingko Trees Discovered in Northeast China

July 27 (Xinhua) -- A pair of gingko trees believed to be at least 600 years old have been discovered in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The two trees, one male and the other female, stand eight meters apart and their 18-meter-long crowning limbs are intertwined.

Local records said that the gingkoes were planted by Taoist monks in the 14th century.

The male is 21.7 meters tall and has a perimeter of 3.2 meters. The female, 20.7 meters high with a perimeter of three meters, is loaded with green grape-like fruit.

According to local villagers, the female tree produces more than 500 kilograms of fruit each year.

The gingko is a dioecious plant species -- comes in both sexes - - which survived the glacial period over two million years ago in China. The tree is also known as the "longevity tree" because it can live up to 1,000 years. Gingkoes are highly valued for their medicinal properties.
