Hospitals, governments promote Tibetan medicine

A Beijing traditional Tibetan medicine hospital is helping satisfy a nationwide itch to use the western region's cures.

The Beijing Tibetan Hospital is working to turn its 2,000-square-metre outpatient building into a full-service hospital featuring Tibetan medical treatments, research and education, according to the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

More than 300,000 patients have received Tibetan treatment since the hospital was founded in 1992.

As of 1998, there were 57 Tibetan medicine hospitals in China with a staff of 2,300.

"As the central government carries out its ambitious plan to accelerate development of western China, we hope to put more focus on developing the medicine of ethnic minorities in the west," said administration official Jin Ercheng. "Tibetan traditional medicine is a very unique one."

Traditional Tibetan medicine, part of Tibetan culture, has developed in the Tibet Autonomous Region and nearby provinces. Government agencies have supported the development over the past five years, in part by publishing regulations.

Seventeen service centres and over 1,500 specialists work for Tibet's traditional medicine network. More patients in Tibet are treated in Tibetan medicine hospitals than in Western medical facilities.

The Tibet Autonomous Region Pharmaceutical Plant, the largest Tibetan medicine producer in the region, produces 200,000 kilograms of medicine a year. The Qinghai provincial government has spent about 25 million yuan (US$3.02 million) to develop traditional Tibetan medicine since 1985.

Qinghai has 57 traditional Tibetan medicine hospitals and 1,200 doctors. Every year more than 300,000 patients are treated there.

Sichuan Province also has set up five Tibetan traditional medicine hospitals.

And the Tibetan medicine research centre in Gansu Province has made headway in treating chronic diseases. A pharmaceutical plant attached to the research centre produces 7,000 kilograms of Tibetan medicines every year.

Heavy metal treatments

With a history of more than 3,000 years, Tibetan medicine has developed a set of theories, drugs and treatments.

Different from Han Chinese medicine, Tibetan medicine uses heavy metals, minerals and animals as drugs in addition to herbs, said Renwang Ciwang, vice-president of Beijing Tibetan Hospital.

Tibetans have found 6,000 to 7,000 substances that can be made into drugs, Renwang added.

Tibetan medicine is most effective in treating those vascular disease, digestive system disease and help raise human immunity, Renwang said.
