10,000 Shanghai Volunteers Donate Marrow

More than 11,400 residents in Shanghai have volunteered to donate their marrow to patients suffering from leukemia or other diseases, according to the local Red Cross Society.

The announcement was made during a ceremony to mark the first anniversary of a club of volunteers willing to donate their marrow. The volunteers have given their blood samples to the China Shanghai Marrow Bank for tests.

Over the past three years, 350 people from the United States, Britain, Canada, Singapore, and Hong Kong and Taiwan regions and other parts of China have requested the bank to provide marrow matching for them. Eleven have been successful in getting matching marrows.

Sun Wei, China's first volunteer to offer his marrow to a patient, has appealed to more people to donate their marrows to help needy sufferers.
