Clinical Study on Treatment of Parkinson's Disease with Chinese Medicine



Objective: To assess the clinical effect of Wengan Zhichan Jiaonang (WGZCJN) on the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD).

Methods: 32 cases were randomly divided into the treatment group and control group (there were 16 patients in each, and 9 were male, 7 female) according to the criteria for TCM Syndrome Differentiation: at present, there is no criterion for deficiency syndrome of Liver-Yang of PD. So we adopted the criteria refer to tutor's clinical experience and differential diagnosis of TCM symptoms edited by China Academy of TCM, combined with manifestation of PD and related report of the research of deficiency syndrome of Live-Yang; WM criteria for diagnosis: basically according to the diagnostic criteria of Initial Parkinson Disease (IPD) drew up by National Conference of Extrapyramidal Disease in 1984. Single-blind clinical trail was conducted. 4 pills of WGZCJN (a product of Jining provincial academy of TCM and Pharmacy) were administered t.i.d. for patients in the treatment group. Prescription of WGZCJN: Radix Astragali, Radix Ginseng, Radix Polygoni Multiflori, Radix Dipsaci, Cortex Magnolias Officinalis, Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, etc. Medical powder was extracted from the above herbs by scientific technology, and then put into capsule. Every capsule contained 0.5g.

Results: Although WGZCJN had the same curative effect as Xining (CarbidOPa and levodopa) on senile tremor of CTM and the assay of UPDS (P>0.05), the treatment of deficiency syndrome of Liver-yang physical sign with CGI was obviously superior to that of the control group w<0.05 or P<0.0l).

Conclusion: It was advisable to give treatment of PD by warming the Liver and supplements qi, relieving the depressed qi and promoting blood circulation, and that WGZCJN was an effective medicine for teating PD.
