Clinical Study on 105 Cases of Ulcerative Colitis Treated with "Qibao Jiaonang" and "Kuijie Guanchang Ye"
 
　　
 Objective: Observation on the mechanism and clinical therapeutic effect of Qibao Jiaonang (capsule containing Radix astragali seu hedysari) and Kuijie Guanchang Ye (liquid of enema for ulcerative colitis) on ulcerative colitis.

Methods: 105 cases of ulcerative colitis were treated by:
 (l) Oral administration of Qibao Jiaonang. It consists of Radix astragali seu hedysari, Herba Epimedii, Cortex cinnamomi, Fructus Psoralase, Rhizoma Drynariae, Cornus officinalis, Semen Myristicae, Kezei, etal. Each capsule weighted 0.3g, 5 capsules once, t.i.d. 30 days constituted 1 course of treatment;

(2) liquid of enema for ulcerative colitis consists of Galla Chinensis, Alumen, Radix salviae Miltiorrhizae, Radix Sophorae Flavescentis,et al. 250ml are used for dripping enema (body position should be changed during enema in order to let the fluid flow to the upper portion of intestine). Once or twice every day, 30 days constituted one course of treatment;

(3) supplemented treatment to severe cases such as liquid infusion, dietary control, maintain water electrolyte balance were given. For damp-heat type Gegen Qin Lian Tang (decoction removing heat) and Baitouwong Tang (decoction of Radix Pulsatillae) with some modification such as Kezei, Radix Gentianae used in heavy dose. Qibao Jiaonang and Kuijie Guanchang were given continuously after symptomatic relief. Main Pharmacological tests were carried out simultaneously.

Therapeutic effect was evaluated as following:
 Clinically cured: alleviation of clinical symptoms, no muco-bloody stool, and defecation once or face per day.

Effective: reduction of clinical symptoms, enteroscopic examination shows decreasing in pathological changes, defecation less than 1-3 times per day.

No effect: no significant changes in clinics symptom and enteroscopy.

Results: Clinical cured in 78 cases (74.20/o), 22 cases effective (20.9%), no effect 5 cases (4.9%). Total effective rate is 95.l%. Follow-up study after l/2 year in cured and effective cases showed 5 cases in 85 patients relapsed. The symptoms in relapsing cases were much less severe. Relapse rate is 5.9% and effective rate is 94.1%. Animal experimentation demonstrates that Qibao Jiaonang and liquid of enema for ulcerative colitis are effective in therapy for ulcerative colitis of rat (P<0.05). Observation on mice shows that Powder of Qibao can increase quantity of specific antibody released by spleen cell. It reflects that Qibao powder not only increases the number of antibody forming cell of the spleen and also markedly increases the ability of spleen cell to synthesis antibody. Regional Pharmacodynamic study shows that liquid of enema for ulcerative colitis has anti-inflammatory effect on ear lobe inflammation induced by 2% cedar oil. It has inhibitory effect on tail bleeding time of mice. It has inhibitory action on 12 kinds of bacteria such as staphylococci, and B. Colt et al.

Conclusion: Qibao Jiaonang and liquid of enema have good clinical effect on ulcerative colitis. It is effective in regulating immunity, anti-inflammation, arresting bleeding and bacteriostasis
