Clinical Study on Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus with Composite Yikang Capsule
 
　　
Objective: TO observe the clinical effect of composite Yikang Capsule (CYKC) in treating non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).

Methods: 240 cases of NIDDM were divided randomly into the observed group and the control group. They were observed by blinded method. Herbs were encased in capsule with same external shape but different content. The CYKC given to the observed group contained mainly Radix Ginseng, Exocarpium Morus, Radix Trichosanthes, Herba Ganoderma lucidum, animal's pancreas, three-valence chrome, Phenformin and Glibenciamide, etc., the capsule given to the control group contained Phenformin and Glibenciamide of same dose as that given to the observed group. The therapeutic course persisted for 3 months, which could be divided into 3 stages. The stages were divided depending on the level of blood sugar, it was taken as second Stage when blood sugar decreased to lower than 8 mmol/L, and as third Stage when blood sugar decreased to lower than 7.2 mmol/L, the medication was ended 30 days after entering the third stage and then the effectiveness of the treatment was assayed.

Result: In the 240 cases of the observed group, symptoms disappeared and blood sugar restored to normal in l56 cases, accounting for 65%, while in the 240 cases of the control group, it was 48 cases, accounting for 20%, the difference between the two groups was very significant statistically (P<0.0l), suggesting that CYKC was more predominant than western hypoglycemic agents.

Conclusion: Taking CYKC orally combined with suitable dietotherapy is a rather better treatment for diabetes mellitus. It is due to that Chinese herbal medicine could regulate physiologic function, improve immune function and strengthen the energy to antagonize disease as well as lower blood sugar. Animal's pancreas and three-valence chrome have certain pathogenic therapeutic action. Western herbs could reduce blood sugar quickly, but the effect would not last for a long time, relapse is easy occurred. CYKC combined the superiority of Chinese and western medicine, has a protracted and stable effect, cooperate with dietotherapy, could arise the effect of therapy, decrease rare of relapse, so as to provide an ideal way of treatment for diabetes mellitus.
