Clinical Study on Treatment of Female Menopause Osteoporosis with Bushen Yigu Gao

Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Bushen Yigu Gao (Paste for Tonifying the Kidney and Nourishing Bone) in treating postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Methods: 74 cases of postmenopausal osteoporosis were randomly divided into treatment group and control group. These patients of the two groups were treated respectively with Bushen Yigu Gao (components: Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Epimedium graniflorum, Zihechen, Alisma orientalis) and α D3. The patients of both groups were similar in the state, duration of disease and age. The duration of treatment was three months. Other medicines that influence the osseous metabolism were not used during treatment. The density of radius and ulna, the content of osseous mineral substance and biochemical index of osseous metabolism, as well as the state of the kidney before and after the treatment were observed.

Result: After three months treatment, the apparent1y effective rate and total effective rate in treatment group were 75% and 80% respectively, significantly higher than those of the control group (27% and 62%) (P<0.0l). Bushen Yigu Gao could function in improving the formation of bone and increasing the osseous density which were superior to those of control medicine α D3. In the treatment group, serum estrogen, serum alkaline phosphates levels increased and calcium level in urine decreased. Animal experiments also demonstrated that Bushen Yigu Gao cou1d prevent and cure osteoporosis of the castration rats, which was identified to the clinical result.

Conclusion: Bushen Yigu Gao is effective in preventing and treating postmenopausal osteoporosis.
