The treatment of Alzheimer' Disease by Japanese form of Chinese medicine was based on an overall analysis of symptoms and signs according the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine. Five patterns were diagnosed in clinic.
　　
The 1st pattern was diagnosed as deficiency of the sea of marrow and the therapeutic Principle were strengthening the marrow by reinforcing the function of the kidney. The prescription was based on Zuogui Wan (Decoction for reinforcing Kidney-Yin).
　　
The 2nd pattern was diagnosed as deficiency of Yin (vital essence) of the kidney leading to deficiency of Yin (vital essence) of the liver and vice versa and the therapeutic principle was nourishing the heart and relieve mental strain. The prescription was based on Qifu (The composition of the prescription was  Rehmanniae Radix Conquita, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Ginseng Radix, Atractylodis Ovatae Rhizoma, Puerariae Radix, Polygalae Radix, Armeniacae Semen).

The 3rd pattern was diagnosed as deficiency of both spleen and kidney, and the therapeutic principle was nourishing the blood to promote secretion of essence. The prescription was based on Huanshao Dan (The composition of the prescription was Rehmanniae Radix Conquita, Lycii Fructus, Comi Fructus, Morindae Radix, Cistanches Caulis, Eucommiae Cortex, Ginseng Radix, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Poria, Acori Rhizoma, Polygalae Radix). 

The 4th pattern was diagnosed as the heart channel being obstructed by phlegm as a pathogenic factor with symptoms such as phlegmatic sound in the throat, coma, etc., usually seen in case of apoplexy and epilepsy, and the therapeutic principle was invigorating functioning of the spleen to resolve phlegm to open the aperture of the heart. The prescription was based on Ditan tang (Phlegm-Removing Decoction). 

The 5th pattern was diagnosed as blood stasis, and the therapeutic principle was invigorating blood circulation to transform stasis. The prescription was based on Tongqiaohuoxue Tang (Decoction for Activating Blood Circulation).
