62 Cases of Non-insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus Treated by TCM


 

Objective: To explore the therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine in treating diabetes mellitus type II.

Methods: The patients selected according to the Standard of WHO were treated with Chinese herbal medicine for nourishing Yin and supplementing Qi. The basic prescription consists of Radix Astragalus, Radix Pseudostellaria heterophylla, Radix Rehmannia, Rhizoma Dioscorea, Fructus Cornus, Cortex Moutan Radicis, Poria, Rhizoma Alisma, Radix Salvia Miltiorrhiza, Radix Paeonia Rubra, Radix Scrophulariae, Herba Dendrobium, Radix Asparagus, Rhizoma Anemarrhena and Radix Aucklandia. It might be modified according to condition, for the patients with Yin-deficiency and excess Fire, Fructus Gardeniae and Cortex Phellodendron were added; for patients with Yang-deficiency, cold limbs and edema, Radix Aconitum Carmichaeli Praeparata and Cortex Cinnamomum were added; for patients with restlessness and insomnia, Semen Zizyphus Jujuba and Dens Draconis were added; for patients with Liver-Qi Stagnation, Radix Bupleurum, Fructus Aurantii and Cortex Magnolia Officinalis were added, for old patients with blood hyperviscosity, Rhizoma Sparganium, Rhizoma Curcumae, Zedoariae, Semen Persica, Flos Carthamus and Lumbricus were added.

Result: results of the treatment showed markedly effective in 62 cases, effective in l7, ineffective in 6, and the total effective rate 92.9%. No relapse cases had been found in l3 cases follow-up for half year. The patients markedly effective and effective were improved further after continuative therapy in symptoms improving and blood sugar controlling. Conclusion: TCM showed good effect in treating diabetes mellitus.
