Objective: To observe clinical therapeutic effect of acupuncture treatment of acute lumbar sprain.

Methods: The tender-point 0.5cun beside Shousanli (LI 10) was needled. If the focus was located at the upper or lower portions of the lumbar region, Shuigou (DU 26) was used in combination. Asked the patient to take a sitting position. After routine sterilization, a filiform needle was rapidly inserted into the acupoint and manipulated by lifting and thrusting and twirling the needle repeatedly for about 2min after achieving needling sensations. Simultaneously, asked the patient to make squatting down and standing up movement for about 20 times. Then the needle was agained for 20 minutes. During retaining, the needle was manipulated again for 2 or 3 times. A total of 78 cases were treated with this method. Among them, the duration of disease was 1 day in 30 cases, 2 days in & cases and above 3 days in 40 cases.

Results: After treatment, of the 78 cases, 65 were cured, constituting 83.3%, 12 had marked improvement, constituting 15.4% and 1 case had no clear effect constituting 1.3%. The total effective rate was 98.3%.
