Objective: Introducing in detail the needling technique of penetrating Zhibian (BL 54) and Shuidao (ST 28), exploring the probable mechanism of the technique in treating chronic prostatitis.

Methods: In the treatment, the patient was in prone posture, and the needle was inserted into the point in a depth of some 115 mm, at upper 2/5 and lower 3/5 of the line drawn from the medial border of posterior superior iliac spine to the medial border of greater trochanter. The location was almost coincident with conventional location of Zhibian (BL 54) ; the needle was inserted towards Shuidao (ST 28), paralleling with the horizontal plane of the body, forming a 20 degree angle with sagittal plane of the body. The needle was manipulated in reducing method of twisting (Without lift-thrust manipulation). It was necessary to induce radiating needle sensation to the perineum and urethra region, or cause distending, warm or relaxed sensation in the pelvic cavity.

Results: The above mentioned technique was applied in the treatment for chronic prostatitis with the result of 54.9% cured, 19.6% remarkably effective, 15.7% effective and 9.8% non-effective, the total effective rate being 90.2%. In the observation of clinical analogy of the penetration needling on human corpse it was found that the adjacent viscera and blood vessels of the corpse were not impaired at all while the needle was inserted from the superficial down to the deep, and the needle inserted was just anterior inferior to the pelvic plexus.

Conclusion: The needling method introduced in the article reveals that it is quite safe in dealing with chronic prostatitis. The mechanism of the treatment may lie in the direct stimulation of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves in the pelvis, the regulative effect of the functional disturbance, and a serial of physiological and biochemical change induced, so that cursive purpose of chronic prostatitis is obtained.
