Clinical Observation on the Treatment of Manic-Depressive Psychosis with
Objective: Presently, manic and depressive psychosis is chiefly treated with large dosage of anti-psychotic drugs and in long teak course. Side effects of drugs are frequently encountered in some patients, the therapeutic effect of drug therapy is not pronounced and some patients dislike taking an-psychotic drugs. Although some patients take the drugs continuously as required, for a long Period of time, relapse of the disease may eventually occur due to drug-resistance, thus, it is of great significance to explore new therapies and ways of treating manic-depressive psychosis.
Methods: Points of Governor Vessel and Reception vessel, some points of the neck and heed relating to central nervous system, some auricular points and the points relating to psychosis were first needled, then electric impulse stimulation was added. This method achieved wonderful therapeutic results.
Results: 100 psychosis patients were treated, 80 cases were cured (80%), l 5 cases remarkably improved (15%), 5 cases improved (5%). The total effective rate was 100%. This therapy was particularly good for the first encountered case (excluding brain trauma) and the relapsed case which happened once years ago (relapsed less than 1 year). The symptoms basically disappeared with the treatment. When the cases being cured drug ingestion was no longer applied.
Conclusion: In managing psychosis points of Governor Vessel and the Pericardium Meridian are chiefly needed, of which Baihui (GV 20) has the effect of restoring consciousness, Renchong(GV 26), one of the "13 ghost points for psychosis" in the ancient time, has the action of inducing resuscitation and reducing Yang, and it was an important point in ancient time for psychosis. Penetrating Renzhong (GV 26) to Yinjiao (GV 28), the latter overlapping with stomach meridian, may communicate Yin and Yang, causing Yang descending to relieve manic state and Yin ascending to promote sleep, so that the manic will be calmed. Brain was held an important position in the meridian system and in the pathological she of brain. When needling Baihui (GV 20), Sishencong (EX-HN1), Fengfu (GV 16), Yamen (GV 15),Yintang (EX-HN 3) and some temporal points, the brain is directly stimulated by needling, causing Qi acting on the affected region; and when Qi reaching the affected region therapeutic effect is obtained, in this way better effect may be expected. In the treatment of psychosis patients the author applied an unique way of connecting the points with electro-stimulation i.e. more points were connected with one cord (usually one cord only for one point), particularly in the head-neck region, to cause several loops so as to enhance the effect of dredging the meridians and regulating central nervous system, therefore the recovery of psychosis was made possible.
