Objective: We have reported that acupuncture can induce ovulation through regulation hypothalamus-pituitary under normal estrogen circumstance. The first indication of acupuncture is dysfunctional uterine bleeding. This paper is aimed to observe the treatment of acupunthee plus estrogen on the pubertal oligomenorrhea (POM) with low estrogen levels.

Methods: Sixty patients with POM were divided into 3 groups randomly, 20 Patients were treated with estrogen administration (A), 20 with acupuncture (B) and 20 with acupuncture plus estrogen administration (C).

Results: 5 of 20 in group A, 12 of 20 in group B and 14 of 20 in group C ovulated ther treatment. The effect in group B and C were significantly statistically different from in group A (P<0.05, P<0.05). Meanwhile, serum estrogen levels of early follicular phase in group B and C increased sighficantly P<0.05, p<0.0l) between patients with-ovulation and anovulation.

Conclusion: The effect of acupuncture inducing ovulation associates with the estrogen levels, this simple and practicable method is not only first choice of treatment of irregular menstruation caused by dysfunctional uterine bleeding, but also suitable for treatment of irregular menstruation caused by oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea according to blood estrogen levels of patients.
