WHO promotes TCM for SARS
The World Health Organization is promoting a traditional Chinese Medicine treatment plan to fight SARS. This is the world's first such plan to focus on traditional medicine for dealing with SARS infections.
The plan is a joint effort by the World Health Organization and China's State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. During last year's SARS outbreak, more than three thousand patients in China received treatment with traditional Chinese medicine. The WHO found that, compared with other methods, traditional medicine reduces SARS symptoms considerably, and has fewer side effects. It can also help control side effects brought on by steroid treatment. The WHO says nearly 40 countries and regions in Asia and the Pacific will be the first to adopt the plan.
