Supplements Must Be Consistent
Girls should think twice about stopping their calcium supplements. Dr. Kavita Ghatge of the Center for Human Nutrition and Bone Metabolism Group at the University of Sheffield, England, found in a study of 86 girls ages 11 and 12 that drinking a fruit drink fortified with 800 mg of calcium daily for 18 months added 1.2 percent more calcium to their bones than girls not taking the supplement.
But the benefit disappeared within two years after stopping the supplement, he reported at the annual meeting of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research.
Weak bones are a major cause of osteoporosis in women as they grow older. Children and adolescents need to build bone density when they are young, the peak period for bone growth, Ghatge said.
