Many New Mothers Experience Depression

(NUI) - Bringing a baby into the world is considered to be one of the happiest moments in a woman's life. Some new mothers, however, experience an emotional letdown ranging from mild "baby blues" to severe depression after childbirth.

Statistics show that at least 10 percent of new mothers experience postpartum depression.

If you have recently had a baby and you are not your usual self, here are some signs that you might be experiencing postpartum depression:

Feelings of sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, guilt or pessimism.

Loss of interest in activities that used to bring you pleasure.

Loss of sex drive.

Loss of interest in your baby.

Disturbing thoughts.

Irritability.

Fatigue.

Restlessness and difficulty concentrating.

Changes in weight or appetite.

Difficulty sleeping.

It is natural for your body to respond to the changes in your lifestyle associated with having and caring for a baby. But if you believe you might be suffering from postpartum depression, it's important to consult a professional for diagnosis and treatment. Treatments include psychotherapy and medication. Your mental health professional can determine what is best for you.

If you are experiencing symptoms of postpartum depression, taking the time to treat yourself well can make a difference. Here are some suggestions:

1. Talk to other new parents. It can be comforting to share the experiences of others who are going through a similar situation.

2. Pamper yourself each day by doing something relaxing that you enjoy, such as taking a bath, reading a book or eating at your favorite restaurant. Make sure to get enough sleep.

3. Don't neglect your sexuality. If your sex drive is down, there are things you can do to give it a boost. In her manual on women's sexual health, "She's Gotta Have It!" psychologist and nutritionist Betty Kamen offers advice on how to enhance your sexual desire.

4. Take care of your body with regular exercise and a healthy diet. Nutrition is vital at this time in your life and experts say that along with its health benefits, exercise is also a "mood booster."
