FDA Rules That Products Can Carry Nutrient Claim Label for Choline Content
The US Food & Drug Administration has ruled that products containing a qualifying amount of choline may carry a nutrient content claim.
Choline is well recognized as an essential nutrient, known for preventing fat accumulation in the liver; metabolizing fat and cholesterol; providing structure to cell membranes; facilitating cell-to-cell communication; and manufacturing the neurotransmitters responsible for memory centers and muscle contractions.
With the FDA ruling, foods such as beef liver that contain more than 110mg of choline per serving will be labelled as an "excellent source of choline". Those containing over 55mg will carry labels stating they are a "good source" of the nutrient.
