The Shanghai Drug Administration launched a campaign warning people of the dangers of antibiotic abuse.

Antibiotics account for 35 per cent of the city's total medicine bill. And 80.6 per cent of local households keep antibiotics at home, making Shanghai one of the most serious antibiotic abusers among Chinese cities.

Using antibiotics without consulting doctors may lead to allergies, retardation and even death, said Hu Bijie, the director of the division of Pulmonary Infection at Zhongshan Hospital and of the Institute of Respiratory Diseases of China.
