Alternative Medicine - Sounds for Health


The music therapy uses sounds as a healing method, through treatments that induce to listen, act, compose and express with movements.. these different types of therapy are used generally with educational, entertainment, rehabilitation, preventive and psychotherapeutic objectives.

The objective of music therapy is to balance and coordinate the feelings, experiences and sensations and broaden the sensibility through attention exercises; activate creativity and personal security. In music the slow and soft harmonies tend to make the physical activity softer. And the complex and dynamic harmonies tend to stimulate agitation and reduce concentration.

Through music therapy the specialist looks forward to make the patient learn more about his self and to extract his hidden possibilities to create new sensations, new messages according with his actions and feelings. So the treatment is effective the number of sessions per week goes from one to three according to what the specialist believes is convenient in each case.

During the therapy the first is to get the patient to be relaxed, so he reaches concentration or predisposition to the treatment; then musical auditions are used to familiarize the patient with sonorous stimuli, then this is followed by a simple rhythmic activity, to stimulate the participation in a group, then the exploration of instrumental and vocal sounds help to reach a major expression and finally the sonorous-musical and dramatic improvisation permits to observe the behavior and the possibilities of expression and creation.

In the persons who have a psychiatric illness through the repetition of a determinate musical structure, the objective is to alleviate the fears to the unknown situations and favor self esteem and security. In the handicapped, the dynamism of music impulses motivation to reach goals of rehabilitation and helps to recover the physical rhythm. In older persons the objective is to preserve the remembering and memory mechanisms with the help of melodies of the past.

In persons with hearing problems music is understood as simple rhythmic vibrations. The transmitted vibrations through the air are felt by the skin, muscles and the nervous system of the patient that will be able to feel the height, intensity and duration of the music.
