ClinicalObservation on the Therapeutic Effect of 8 Cases of Senile Positional
Objective: To observe the clinical therapeutic effect of acupuncture of Vertigo-Auditory Area (MS 1l) for treatment of senile positional vertigo.
Methods: 74 senile vertigo patients ranging in age from 60 to 79 years were randomly
divided into treatment group (n=38, 23 males and 15 females) and control group (n=36, 19 males and 17 females). In the treatment group, the duration of disease was from 7 days to 30 days, with an average of 1l.5 ± 5.1 days; While in control group, that was from 5 to 41 days, with an average of 12.4 ± 7.7 days. Patients of the treatment group were treated with intravenous drip of Betahistine hydrochrochloride 500ml, 5% glucose (or normal saline) 250ml plus "Mailuoning" injection 20ml, once daily, with oral administration of flunarizini hydrochloridium 6mg (once daily) and "Xuanyunting" (vertigo eliminating medicine) 25mg (3 times daily), and also with scalp-acupuncture of bilateral MS1l-points, once daily. Patients of the control group were treated with the same medicines with treatment group. The treatment in both group was given once daily, with 5 days being a therapeutic course. After one course of treatment, the therapeutic effect was analyzed.
Results: In treatment group, of the 38 cases, 30 (78.9%) were cured, 7 (18.5%) had improvement and one (2.6%) was ineffective; while in the control group, of the 36
cases, 5 (13.9%) were cured, 15 (41.7%) had improvement and 16 (44.4%) had no any significant changes. There was a significant difference between the two groups in the therapeutic effect.
Conclusion: Scalp-acupuncture therapy is effective in rapid improvement of senile positional vertigo patients' clinical symptoms, and the therapeutic duration is shorter and the therapeutic effect is stable.
