Treatment of Cerebral Apoplexy according to Differentiation of Syndromes IP
The author of the present paper adopted traditional Chinese medicine therapy to treat 2 cases of cerebral apoplexy and achieved satisfied results.
Cases l: Huang X X, male, aged 60 years, a merchant. He had got a hypertension but had no any subjective symptoms and thus had not taken any hypotensors. In August of 1992, due to over drinking, he suddenly underwent dizziness, headache, tinnitus, deviation of the mouth and eyes, muscular spasm of the left leg, flushed face, curling and stiffness of the tongue, sluggish in moving with difficulty in speaking, hemiplegia of the left side, red tongue with yellow greasy coating, taunt slippery pulse, blood pressure 200/130mmHg. Therapeutic principles were calming the liver, suppressing the yang-hyperactivity, resolving the phlegm, clearing away pathogenic heat, dredging channels and relieving the muscular spasm.
Recipes and ingredients: (l) Angong Niuhuang Bolus (Bezoar Bolus for Resurrection), one pill per time, twice daily, continuously for 3 days: (2) Modified Tianma Gouteng Decoction (Modified Decoction of Gastrodia and Uncaria): Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis), Shijueming (Concha Haliotidis), Xiakucao (Spica Prunellae), Huangqin (Radix Scutella-riae), Chuanbei (Bulbuls Fritillariae Pallidiflorae),Tianzhuhuang (Concretio Silicea Bambusae), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae), Longgu (Os Draconis Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), Muli (Concha Ostreae), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae), Changpu (Rhizoma Aeori Graminei), decocted in Water for oral administration. After one week's treatment, his blood pressure was down to 160/100mmHg, he had slight dizziness, clear speech, free movement of the upper limb, but his left lower limb still had light difficulty in moving. He was then asked to take supplemented Qiju Dihuang Pill (Bolus of Six Drugs, Rehmannia with Wolfberry and Chrysanthemum) and Da Huoluo Dan. Half a year later, he could go to Beijing to hold a business talk.
Case 2: Wu X X, male, aged 55 years, engaging in business. He had history of hypertension and drinking. On March 27, 1995, he suddenly underwent headache, dizziness, tinnitus, weakness in the lower limbs, numbness sensation on the left half side of the body, inability to move, consciousness in mental activity, deviation of the mouth and eyes, slurred speech, sialorrhea, red tongue tip with White thin coating, taut thready pulse, and blood pressure 180/100mmHg. Therapeutic principles: Nourishing Yin to calm the liver, suppressing Yang, dredging channels, expelling wind and regulating nutrient.
Recipes and ingredients: Buyang Huanwu Decoction (Decoction invigorating Yang for recuperation) and Modified Tianma Gouteng Decoction (Modified Decoction of Gastrodia and Uncaria): Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Taoren (Semen Persicae), Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis), Dilong (Lumbricus), Shangiisheng (Ramulus Loranthi), Xiqiancao (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Huainiuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidelltatae), Xiakucao (Spica Prunellae), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Shijueming (Concha Haliotidis) and Mingtianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae). Acupuncture points used were: Jianyu LI 5), Quchi (LI 1l), Shousanli (LI 10), Waiguan (SJ 5), Hegu (LI 4), Huantiao (GB 30), Zusanli (ST 36), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Jiexi (ST 41), Dicang (ST 4), Jiache (ST 6), Netting (ST 44) and Tanchong (LR 3). The above-mentioned recipes and drugs were taken continuously for 15 doses and acupuncture was given to the patient once every other day. Afterwards, his blood pressure was 130/90mmHg; he could manage to walk by the help of a stick. His symptoms of deviation of the mouth and eyes, and speech were improved significantly. He was ordered to take the herb medicine, Huatuo Zhaizhao Pill, Da Huoluo Dan, etc. Then he could look after himself in daily life and in tourism.
