Elderly People More Carefree Than the Young
Weinheim, Germany (dpa) - Elderly people suffer fewer bad moods than the young, according to a U.S. study reported in the German journal "Psychologie Heute".
Researchers asked 184 people between the ages of 18 and 94 about their mood five times a day over a one-week period. They discovered that negative emotions decreased constantly between the ages of 18 and 60. Elderly people can enjoy positive experiences longer and are far less likely to descend into low a mood than younger people.
The researchers believe this is because elderly people are more conscious of the transitory nature of life. They realise what they have in life, and their emotions are deeper and more complex.
But the study noted that people's emotional curve tends to dip again when they exceed 60 years of age.
