New Ointment for Eczema
Precription drug Protopic shows success in difficult cases of the skin disease
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 24 HealthScout) -- If you suffer from recurring bouts of eczema, a new prescription drug may finally end the itching, flaking and sores that characterize the skin disease.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new ointment, Protopic (tacrolimus), for people with moderate to severe eczema (also called atopic dermatitis). Protopic will be used for patients who haven't had much success with traditional therapies. Eczema is a non-contagious skin problem that causes redness, itching and oozing sores.
Studies show that Protopic resulted in as much as 90 percent improvement in about a third of people who used it. The studies also indicated that it's safe to use Protopic for periodic treatment over long periods of time. The most common side effect is temporary stinging or burning where the ointment is applied. This decreases as the eczema heals.
Protopic may also cause the skin to be more sensitive to ultraviolet light. So, it's important to avoid sunlight, sun lamps and tanning beds. If you have to be outdoors, wear clothing that protects your skin. Women who are pregnant, could become pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this product until they have talked with their doctor.
