Breast Implants Withdrawn in UK
LONDON (Reuters Health) - A type of breast implant is being withdrawn from the UK market because of a lack of safety information, the UK's Department of Health announced on Monday.
The department's Medical Devices Agency (MDA) had been carrying out a series of investigations into the safety of breast implant filler materials following last year's concerns over implants filled with soya oil.
The latest investigation into Hydrogel-filled implants made in France and Germany ``revealed inadequacies in the manufacturers' biological safety assessments and concluded that there was not enough information to fully assess either of the filler materials,'' according to the MDA.
The two implants involved are PIP hydrogel breast implants made in France and used by about 4,000 women in the UK since 1994, and NovaGold breast implants made in Germany, which have been used by 250 women in the UK since 1996.
``It must be stressed that no definite health risks have been identified,'' the MDA's Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pat Troop said. ``The recall is purely a precautionary measure until the manufacturers have addressed the MDA's concerns regarding their biological safety assessments.''
