Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese
Medicine, founded in 1956, is also one of the oldest universities of traditional Chinese
medicine in China. Situated at the foot of Baiyun Mountain with beautiful environment, the
university covers an area of 400,000 square meters and has a floor space of 290,000 square
meters, The value of the equipment and facilities of the university amounts to RMB 108
million. There are 530,000 books in the library of the university.
The university consists of First Colleges of Medicine, Second College
of Medicine, College of International Education, College of Pharmacology, Department of
Acupuncture & Moxibustion, College of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Continuing
Education, Department of Social Sciences, 13 research institutes, nursing school of TCM
and professional school of traditional Chinese medicine and 4 affiliated hospitals. It was
one of the first higher learning institutions, which were given the right to award
Master's degrees and Doctoral degrees in China. Currently, 24 branches have been
designated as Master's Degree-granting units, 9 branches as Doctoral Degree-granting
Units. The University offers 7 specialties for undergraduates, e.g., traditional Chinese
medicine, acupuncture & moxibustion, and orthopedics & traumatology of traditional
Chinese medicine, etc,; a seven-year system of combined undergraduate and postgraduate of
traditional Chinese medicine class and a two-year-professional-training programs in
traditional Chinese medicine, massage of traditional Chinese medicine , medical
application of computer science, and pharmaceutical trading. Today it has a regular
teaching faculty of more than 400 professors and more than 700 lecturers, a student body
of more than 3,000 undergraduates, over 260 post-graduates and over 400 students form
foreign countries, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions.
Since 1974, more than 600 students from 79 countries and Hong Kong,
Macao and Taiwan regions have studied and graduated from the university. In 1979 the first
short-term course of Chinese medicine and acupuncture & moxibustion was held in the
university and over 3,000 participants have received their short-term training in the
university.
