The Technique of Ran’s Finger Needling Therapy of Replenishing Qi and Activating the Flow in Meridians for Treating Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Protrusion

Brief Introduction:

The Ran’s finger needling therapy of replenishing Qi and activating the flow in meridians for treating lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion is of significant and instant curative effect. Patients feel comfortable and the doctors feel convenient. This method is safe without any risk, simple in operation with matured technical procedure, easy to standardize and repeat, and of the outstanding characteristic of traditional Chinese medicine.

Treatment method:

1. The patient is required to lie supine and the doctor sits at the side, facing the patient. The index finger (or middle finger) is placed on Qihai (RN 6) and circular-pressing massage is done clockwise for 40 minutes. The finger force is given to make the patient comfortable and relaxed.

2. Fengshi (GB 31), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Zusanli (ST 36), Qiuxu (GB 40), Taichong (LR 3) are pressed bilaterally counterclockwise for 30 seconds each point.

3. The patient lies prone and the tender point in the lumbar region is taken as the landmark, from where the spots in every 3 vertebrae above and below are taken as the starting and ending points, then the points 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinious processes are pressed with index and middle fingers of both hands, 30 seconds for each point, clockwise for the deficiency syndrome and counterclockwise for those of excess. Then Ashi point (tender spot) is heavily pressed.

4. Huantiao  (GB 30), Weizhong (BL 40), Chengjin (BL 56), Chengshan (BL 57), and Kunlun (BL 60) of both sides are pressed counterclockwise, 30 seconds for each point with the strength tolerable to the patient.

5. The patient is required to lie in lateral recumbent position and Huantiao  (GB 30) is tapped with fist for 8 times, then let the patient get up slowly from bed to do some exercise for 5 minutes.

Clinical Conclusion:

The technique of Ran’s finger needling therapy of replenishing Qi and activating the flow in meridians for treating lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion is of outstanding curative effect, and the more severe the disease is, the quicker the effect. Moreover, the patients’ life quality could be remarkably improved, especially the recovery of the motor functions of limbs.

276 cases who fitted the criterion were divided into treated group (group A) and control group (group B). Those in treated group were treated by finger needling therapy of replenishing Qi and activating the flow in meridians, while those of the control group were treated with the conventional Chinese therapeutic massage. The results showed that the effect of group A was better than that of group B. This therapy is of good safety and no any untoward effects or accidents. The manipulation is simple and easy for doctors to grasp. The multicentral clinical observation found that this therapy has a good repeatability. In addition, it is quite economical and practical with no need of much investment, hence liable to the popularization. So it is a fairly good and mature diagnostic and therapeutic approach of traditional Chinese medicine.
