The Technique of Cold Moxibustion for Treating Bronchial Asthma

 Brief Introduction:

The cold moxibustion therapy is performed by means of applying medicaments on acupoints to enable the medicinal materials to be absorbed from the exterior to the interior and to reach the internal organs through the meridians and collaterals so as to regulate the Qi and blood, rebalance Yin and Yang, and strengthen the anti-pathogenic power and eliminate pathogens, achieving the efficacy of curing the internal disorders by the external use of medicaments.

Bronchial asthma is of high incidence and recurrence rate, giving rise to heavy economic burden to the patients and their families. The cold moxibustion therapy has fairly good effect of preventing the recurrence of the disease, so standardized clinical protocol of cold moxibustion for treating bronchial asthma as well as its visible educational tools have been developed to facilitate the popular use of this therapy.  The extent of popularization: the prevention and treatment of bronchial asthma in hospitals of all levels.

Features of the Technique:

The cold moxibustion therapy is easy to be accepted because of the satisfactory effect of preventing bronchial asthma, convenient manipulation, reliable safety, no side effects, and low expense. The popularization of this therapy would make significant economic and social benefit.

Treatment method:

1. Preparation of the materia medica: white mustard seed 40%, herba asari 40%, radix kansui 10%, and rhizome corydalis 10% are ground into fine powder which is mixed with autumn ginger juice to be made into the cakes in the size of 1󪻑 cm3 and is stuck on the points by adhesive tape.

2. Selection of points

1Feishu (BL 13), Weishu(BL 21), Zhishi (BL 52), and Danzhong (RN 17)

2Pishu (BL 20), Fengmen (BL 12), Gaohuang (BL 43), and Tiantu (RN 22)

3Shenshu (BL 23), Dingchuan (EX-B1), Xinshu (BL 15), Zhongwan (RN 12)

Those on the back are selected bilaterally. 1 group of points is used in each session and 3 groups are used alternately.

3. Method and treatment course

The medicine is stuck on the acupoints for 1 hour each session, one session is given for every 10 days, so altogether 9 sessions are given within 3 months.

Clinical Conclusion:

There were 142 cases in the treated group and 136 in the control group.

The near-term effect: in treated group, 56 cases were unchanged, 75 improved, 10 were markedly effective and 1 was clinically controlled, so the total effective rate was 60.5%; while in control group, 88 cases were unchanged, 48 improved, and there were no markedly effective and clinically controlled cases, so the total effective rate was 35.3%.

The long-term effect: in treated group, 11 cases were unchanged, 74 improved, 51 cases were markedly effective, and 6 were clinically controlled, so the total effective rate was 92.3%; while in control group, 102 cases were unchanged, 34 improved, and there were no any markedly effective and clinically controlled cases, so the total effective rate was 25%.

Thus the difference was statistically significant. Both the near-term and long-term effects of the treated group were superior to those of the control group.
