The Technique of Acupuncture at Acupoint Jiantongxue for Treating Scapulohumeral Periarthritis Brief Introduction: In this project, by means of observing clinically the difference of Jiantongxue point and traditional points for treating the symptoms and signs of shoulder pain and motor impairment of shoulder joint, as well as the pain parameter, the objective analysis is made to determine the therapeutic effect of the quick acupuncture techniques for treating the scapulohumeral periarthritis and to conduct the research for the standardization of the diagnosis and treatment. In this protocol, the traditional acupuncture and the modern theories of neurotomia and neuro-regulation are integrated, the traditional methods of multiple needling, contralateral needling, and distant needling are taken as guidance, the points are selected contralaterally and the empirical point Jiantongxue is needled, which is proven by the clinical trial and experimental research an effective point for treating scapulohumeral periarthritis. Features of technique: 1. Only one acupoint is selected so the needling pain is minimized. 2. Quick and satisfactory effect. 3. Simple operation and easy popularization. 4. Good safety. 5. The body’s auto-rebalance is emphasized. Treatment Method: The point Jiantongxue is selected which is located 2 cun below Zusanli (ST 36) but is more close to the fibula. In-and-out needling is performed (the needle is not retained) to stimulate the superficial fibular nerve and the needle sensation is emphasized. 5 days makes a course of treatment and 4 courses are given. The needles, of gauge 28 and 3-cun length, are the aseptic single-use ones which are made in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, P.R. China. Clinical Conclusion: 1. Point Jiantongxue has been found, a specialized acupoint for treating a specific disease: scapulohumeral periarthritis and other soft tissue injuries of shoulder. 2. The instant effect must be acquired, so the on-spot effective rate of acupuncture is up to 90%. 3. The hypothesis that needling sensation could be developed by needling the nerve branch or nerve trunk is set up. 4. The single-point therapy is performed. 5. Point Jiantongxue, an empirical acupoint is needled and 380 cases were treated at clinic with the total effective rate up to 94.1%. The statistical analysis processing demonstrated that the curative effect of the treated group by needling of this point was better than that of the control group which were treated by the conventional acupoints(P<0.01)and meanwhile, this point is of fair instant analgesia effect, having provided the objective proof for revealing the mechanism of acupuncture and its effect-responding process. 6.
