TCM Treatmentb with the Modified "Wen Dan Tang" in 40 Cases of Melancholia

  MelanchOlia is a 8yndrome caused by emotionai strtss and stagnatfon of gh involtw the
  llveF aIfecting the heart and spleen, and leading tO driharmony Of qi of the zangW organs.
  Because Of the comPlibed condition, it is not easy tO detendne the therapeutic priniPles.
  In this series of 40 cases9 the moamed Wen Dan Tallg (Decoction fOr Clearing Away
  GallbIadder-Heat) was used fOr the treahoenL Of them, 19 cases were cured, 16 hoproved,
  and 5 failed, with tOtal effectve rate of 87.5%.
  The chief clforcal medfestatons of
  melancholia include emotional dePression,
  restlessness, grief, distension and fullness in
  the chest and hypochOndriac regions, insoIIuila
  and dream-distaled sleep, which are often
  seen in the cases of dePressive psychosis,
  hysteria, neuroses and menoPausal syndrome,
  and frequentiy encotmtered in females. The 40
  cases in this series were treated with the
  modified Wen Dan Tang with satisfactory
  results rePorted as follows.

  Of the 40 cases, l2 cases were male and
  28 female, ranging in age l9-25 years in ll
  cases, 25-35 years in 7 cases, 35-45 years in 4
  cases, and 45-55 years in 18 cases. The
  condition was related to emohonal in jmp in l4
  cases, introVed in l9 cases, menopausal
  syndIOme in 6 cases, and traumatic in jmp in l
  case. Accordjng to TCM differenhation, l3
  cases pertained to stagnation of liver qi, l8
  cases stagnation of qi and Phlegm, 6 cases
  deflciency of the heart and spe, and 3 cases

excessive fire due to yin-deficiency.
  Therapeutic Method
  All the 40 cases were treated by the
  modified Wen Dan Tang with all the other
  drugs susPended. Ingredients of the
  PrescriPtion: Chen Pi (Pericwim Citri
  ReticulM) l5g, Ban Xia unzoma Pinelliae)
  10g, Fu Ling (POria) l5g, Zhu Ru (Caulis
  Bambusae in Taeniam) l5g, Zhi Shi (FrUctUs
  Wtil IInmaturus) 10g, and Yu Jin (Rwhx
  Curcuma) l2g. For severe qi--deficiency,
  adding Dang Shen (Radix Codonopsis) 15g
  and Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) 20g; for
  severe stagnation of blood, adding Dan Shen
  (Radix Salviae MilhOrrhizae) 20g and Chuan
  Xiong (ANzoma Chuanxiong) l5g; for severe
  inswta, adding Bai Zi Ren (Semen Biotae)
  l5g, Yuan Zhi (Radix Polygalae) 6g and He
  Huan R (Cortex Albialae) l0g; fOr severe qi
  stagnation, adding Chai Hu (RAnx BuPleuri)
  l5g and Xiang Fu (ANzoma Cyperi) l0g; fOr
  anoreala, adding Sha Ren ooctUs AIntal) 6g,
  Jiao San Xian (parched Fructos Catgi,
  Fructlls Hordei GeMams, and Massa
  Fermentata Medicinalis) l0g each, and fOr tw
  stool, adding Rou Cong Rong (Herba
  Cistanchis) 20g and Da Huang (Radix et
  ANzoma ffeei) 6g. The decoction was given
  one dose daily, l5 daye constituting one
  theraPeutic course. 2 to 3 courses of treatment
  were required.
  Ther8Peutic ResultS
  After 2 to 3 courses of treatthellt, of the
  40 cases trCatCd, l9 cases were cured, l6 cases
  imProved, and 5 cases failed. The total
  effective rate was 87.5%.
