FISH oil given to patients after surgery speeds up recovery and shortens hospital stays.
Doctors at the University of Dresden who gave patients fish oil found that they also suffered no weight loss, while those on soybean oil did.
The livers and pancreas of fish-oil users worked better and they spent less time in intensive care.
It is thought omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil provided the benefits. These acids have been shown to help prevent some chronic diseases, including heart disease and arthritis, and research also shows they may have beneficial effects in a range of other diseases, from prostate cancer and asthma to menstrual pain and skin disorders.
It has also been claimed that the reason why the so-called Mediterranean diet is so healthy is because it puts the emphasis on food with high levels of omega-3 acids.
