Health officials investigating concerns which have triggered action against kava products in Europe say problems with liver failures may not stem from traditional use of the herb.
The Ministry of Health said problems overseas might have arisen from the high level of kava lactones used in some dietary supplements.
Similar supplements are advertised in New Zealand on the internet.
