Acquired Immunodeficiency
Syndrome (AIDS) AIDS is a worldwide infectious disease
discovered in recent years. Its fatality rate is very high. As the etiology is concerned,
AIDS is known as to be caused by viral infection.
Western medicine has not yet made any effective treatment for it. AIDS is
frequently found in homosexuals and drug addicts. It could be also infected to infants and
children. AIDS is mainly transmitted by means of sexual contacts, transfusion, injection
and mother-infant channel. This disease, in TCM, could be classified to the categories of ¡°Wen Re Bing (epidemic febrile diseases)¡±, ¡°Xu Lao (consumptive diseases)¡±,
etc. Key Points of Diagnosis 1.Chief clinical manifestations l) A marked loss of weight: the decrease
could be up to 10 percent or even more of the normal weight; 2) Remarkable debility, tiredness and
fatigue; 3) Severe diarrhea persisting for more
than one month; 4) Persistent or intermittent fever
lasting for more than one month; 2.Secondary clinical manifestations; 1) Multiple hemorrhagic and sarcomatoid
lesions of the skin; 2) Candida albicans infection on the oral
and pharyngeal mucosae; 3) Herpetic skin diseases or just even
herpes zoster persisting for more than one month; 4) General pruritus of the skin; 5) Pulmonary infections (pneumocystic
carinii pneumonia commonly seen); 6) General lymphadenectasis; 7) Presence of neurological signs; 8) Meningitis not significantly responding
to treatment. 3.Laboratory tests l) Immunological tests show a defect and
hypofunction in cellular immunity, while in humoral immunity indices e.g. IgG, IgA and IgM
are increased. The cause of the immunological changes is not clearly known. 2) Virological examinations may find the
infection of HTLA-III virus. If three chief and one secondary
manifestations are found in a suspected case, serumal immunological tests should be
performed to confirm the diagnosis. Syndrome Differentiation 1. Prodrome Stage Deficiency of both Qi and Yin Chief Symptoms and Signs: Low-grade fever, night sweating, fatigue
