One case of herb rehabilitation for knee joints swelling and pain

Background:

Most middle-aged and aged patients with knee joints swelling and pain (knee joints degeneration is shown by X ray) are obese, the knee joints are chronically damaged by heavy load and much walk or extra exercises. According to the Chinese medicine theories: the middle-aged and aged have weak liver and kidney, their sinews and bones are not well nourished, when damaged by too much labor, they are attacked by wind and moist and it is the main cause of the disease.

Objective:

To discuss the treating effects of Chinese herb on knee joints swelling and pain.

Unit:

Subject:

One 52 years old obese retired female patient who first visited our clinic on May 6, 1996, enjoyed sport exercises and did much more after retiring, she practiced Taiji sword and setting up exercises for the aged. In recent two months, she felt pain in her left knee joint and also troublesome in flexing and extending, after treating with acupuncture, local blocking, drug plaster attaching for months, there was just minor effects, acesodune tablets had to be taken orally, she walked limping. Examination: When the two knee joints were contrasted, there was obvious swelling in the left knee joint, the press pain was more severe in the inner side, slight degeneration of the left knee joint was shown by X ray.

Intervention:

To nourish the liver and the kidney, to enforce the sinew and the bone, to drive away the wind and the moist and to stretch the tendon web. Prescription: whole Chinese angelica 10g, fried White peony root 10g, fried Szechwan lovge rhizome 6g, Dashudi 15g, fried Chuanduan 10g, Twotooth achyranthes root 10g, Chinese taxillus twig 10g, fried Gouji 10g, Sixpetal clematist root 10g, Angelica root 10g, etc. One dose per day, and she was ordered to reduce exercises. (especially crouching).

Results:

After taking the medicine for 4 weeks, the swelling and pain of the knee were from 0o – 10 o , the function was basically not hampered, while to crouch was limited a little with some aching pain. The medicine was taken for another two weeks so that the effects were consolidated, she was followed up till now and there was no relapse.

Conclusion: the Chinese medicine has excellent effects on the swelling and pain of the knee joints.
