How
to remember the TCM prescriptions(1)?
Most of the TCM prescriptions used clinically are consist of two or more
herbs, for the application of one single herb is limited. When several herbs
are combined together, which every herb can play its advantages and
inhibiting disadvantages fully. The following seriates of articles will
illustrate how to remember these prescriptions more easily, we hope they
will be helpful to Medboo students.

Comparing
Mahuang Tang(Ephedra Decoction)
with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction):
Both of them can treat exterior syndrome due to exogenous wind cold.
Mahuang Tang(Ephedra Decoction):
Ma Huang(Ephedra), Gui Zhi(Cinnamom Twig) and Ku Xing Ren(Bitter Apricot
Kernet) in
Mahuang Tang(Ephedra Decoction)
are to enhance the effect of inducing sweating and dispelling cold, and to
disperse the lung and relieve asthema. It is a drastic prescription of
inducing sweating with pungent and warm herbs, it is suitable to treat the
exterior excess syndrome due to exogenous wind cold, marked by fever,
without perspiration, asthma and cough.
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction):
Gui Zhi(Cinnamom Twig), Bai Shao(White Peony Root), plus Shengjiang(Fresh
Ginger) and Dazao(Chinese Date) can relieve the exterior syndrome by
inducing sweating is not so strong as
Mahuang Tang(Ephedra
Decoction), but stronger in regulating yingqi and weiqi. It can treat
exterior deficiency syndrome due to exogenous wind cold, marked by fever,
perspiration, aversion to cold.
